DAMN! Y'all are getting into some serious discussions here! Excellent...now for my take on this world we call the music biz. A long, long time ago in a galaxy far far away there were these people called musicians. They just wanted to play music and do what they loved. They wrote songs and sometimes jumped around on stage. They were much loved by the masses and became very famous. Then this whole other group of people that could barely sing and dance and never wrote their own songs called themselves musicians and it F**ed everything up. These new people were actually entertainers and watered down and mutated music. Curse you Milli Vanilli...........
it's all about plain old rock and roll my friends no matter what you want to call it.

i dunno. i think pop/rock is a better term than power-pop. i'm just not fond of the word 'pop'. it's gotten such a bad connotation recently from 'bands with brand new amps' like nsync and people like britney spears. those who call themselves musicians, but in my mind, i believe they'd be nothing without ProTools. anyhow. there are a few bands with brand new amps who may be getting more popular, but they've stuck with the genre of music that they've always been in. like...let's say...the Pixies. they're still indie, although i know you can get them in any major record store. they've jut got that classic, low budget record sound to it, still. let's see...Modest Mouse is still making some good ol' indie, although they're on Epic Records now. that's far from independant record labels, but still. You raise a good point, one that I did consider when posting my message. Mudhoney is still indie, even though a three-album stint on a major label may lead one to believe otherwise. (Though that's not the best of example, since their albums didn't sell well enough and now they're back to Sub Pop) Then there's Sonic Youth, who, though have been signed to Geffen, are still most certainly indie. All right, I've come to a conclusion. Indie isn't necessarily about what label you're on, but what you do with your success, or lack thereof. If you're on an indie label, you're an indie band. But then there's SY and Mudhoney and all those other bands with brand new amps that've gone major but are still considered indie, and that proves one thing: a major label band can still be indie if they use their success to champion indie bands with brand new amps, to make their own indie label, to do the occasional secret free show...basically, if they are using a major label solely as a method to reach a greater number of people, not to sell out and get massive amounts of money. You know what I mean?

it's all the mix guys. it's all in the mix. I'm very happy to see you guys tossing around Mudhoney and Sonic Youth and Modest Mouse! It's hard to find good indie sounding bands with brand new amps these days, but... check out www.slackattack.com and you'll find the perfect example of a band on the rise with the "indie" sound

Yeah, I love Slack and I've been wanting their full-length album for quite some time now, but I doubt I'll ever find a copy. But those two new MP3s up are phenomenal...that first one, from the "Whatever it is" part on is just...awesome. ;D

their old one is getting hard to find, they don't sell it at shows anymore... Hopefully they will have a new one out before I retire.
