Just letting you guys know that I'll be in Brazil for the holidays. I might be able to peek in here every once in a while at my step dad's parents' house at night, but I probably won't be on very frequently for a little while. Notifying you guys just in case anyone wonders why I don't post for a little bit. Anyway, cool things are going to start happen with Heatstroke Records. For starters, we're getting a new, far-improved design soon...it looks really great, a huge improvement. So that should be cool. ( www.heatstrokerecords.comOn an even more unrelated note, I thought I'd clue you guys in on something pretty cool...I know some of you guys like Self. Anyway, at their site ( www.selfmusic.net) they are streaming a new b-side once a week for every week until their new album comes out. Also streaming are sample clips from the album. Self has a strong history of releasing b-sides online (their last two downloadable albums and 6-song collection have all been excellent) but their latest 3 on now prove that there's stronger promise in Self than there ever has. "Breakdown" is a great rock song (with a beautiful bridge), "While the Gangsters Sleep" touches on their funky hip-hoppy past, and "NOW" is a haunting piano-driven ballad. Really fantastic stuff that I thought I'd just tune you guys into. That's all for now. Check you all later, -Jakob

I'm in my step-dad's parents' apartment right now on their dial-up connection. The apartment's really nice, I've been here 4 times now and I like it a lot. Very cosy, yet still reasonably large. It's a shame that my room gets so freaking hot though... I'd ramble more about Brazil right now but I've got limited time and I'd rather just check out the other posts instead.

Okay. First suggestion for anyone who comes to Brazil themselves: make sure you´re one hell of a driver. I´d like to think I´m a pretty well-traveled person, but this country had the craziest roads I´ve ever seen, or will ever see. (Hopefully) The highways are plagued with hundreds of huge trucks that are all over the place and have really insane drivers. Last time we were here, we were on a small, two-lane mountain road...(We were on the inside, hugging ther mountain) The outside lane had NO bumpers or protection in case someone swerved too close, so you could accidently drive right off the mountain. Anyway, this truck comes barrelling down the other lane at god knows what speed, and it´s a really curvy road. He swerves on one of the curves, and the entire right side of the vehicle lifts off the road --- wheels and all. This causes his top left side to lean into our lane briefly, until the wheels crash back down onto the pavement. No accident happened (at least that we saw) but the damn thing came really close to falling over and sliding into us. And there´re also these little bridges that you have to go under that are one-laned but two way. So you´re driving along and you have to stop and make sure that another car isn´t coming the other way. If you didn´t know about that crazy little setup (and there weren´t any signs) you could easily get into a head-on collision. Ouch...
I´m on an island right now called Ilhabella. It´s very nice and generally really warm...the beaches are great, I really enjoying going on little walks by myself on them. Gives you a while to think about things. Anyway, the water´s incredibly clear --- beats the hell out of that dirgy Ocean City beach in New Jersey. (Although not quite as clear as another beach I saw 2 years ago in Brazil...you didn´t even need a snorkling mask to see the bottom...it was clearer than crystal) I went snorkling a little here and saw schools of 1,000s of fish swim by, plus this bizarre coral-type thing that spread over a rock. Really strange but very interesting.
The hotel we´re in is very nice, as well. It´s designed like a little village almost...it´s difficult to describe, but it´s great. And the temperature is really humid and hot...not always very comfortable, but sometimes it can be really nice.
All in all everything´s going great. And have a merry christmas eve tomorrow, everyone. (Really snuck up on me)

I ask you what kind of family spends Christmas in Brazil? I'll tell you...a rich one.
You haven't run into Paris Hilton have you?

Another kind of family is one that has a Brazilian member in it, and one that lives in an upper-middle class that doesn´t spend too much money frequently so that they can always travel, since both parents are foreigners. We happen to be both!
Really, we aren´t rich. We have a good amount of money in case anything happens, but it´s not over $1 million. You should see some (most) of the people who go to my school. It´s disgusting. And what I hate about rich kids is that they never apply themselves because they´re so damn sure that no matter how bad they fail, they´ll still have a wealthy adulthood thanks to their parents´multi-million dollar companies. This one kid at my old school went to visit his dad at work (he owns a national bank chain) and his dad gave him $1,000 on the spot. No occasion, either...not birthday, Christmas, or Bastille Day. And the kid was 13 at the time...he came to school and waved the wad of $100 bills around to all of us! What an idiot...his dad probably drained one of his clients´ accounts to give him that money...

I had a dream where I went on Queer for the Straight Guy and they told me that since I didn't have hairy eyebrows that they would give me a Brazilian wax instead. I was sooooooo happy
