Righty, ok before I start, this is not a bitch at anyone at all in the slightest, I promise. I am by no means innocent in this.......not that everyone is guilty......or anything *gets all flustered*
I have noticed that the threads on this board start off on the topic they're meant to but quickly go off on tangents. It's fair enough that some of them progress on to a deeper discussion about it but a lot of it ends up with just random unrelated stuff.........
On another board I use, all the members (it's fairly small) make a concerted effort not to "hi-jack" threads and if they wanna say summat they start a new thread......... I know this creates lots of new threads at first but it stops important posts and questions being lost in random conversations about pants etc.....
Ok, if no-one likes this idea, just ignore me but I think it'll make life a lot easier for new people visiting the board to find stuff out.....
I have cast my vote btw.

If you had been on the board for a long time you would know thats theres not much you can do to stop any topics going off-topic. After a couple of pages they usually will, like on most boards. I don't mind it to be honest, unless it goes from 3 to 9 pages in a day and its all a load of stuff i don't want to read, like a private conversation for example. Personal conversations should be kept over an instant messanger or PMs on the board. However it is a little annoying when your thread goes off-topic on the first page.
So i'm kind of on the fence with this, i don't mind most of it as long as it isn't 2 or 3 people having a conversation they could easily have elsewhere, it saves people from reading pages and pages of pointless stuff and by the time they get to replying about the original subject its gone so off-topic thats theres no point. I'm so used to all of this that i don't mind as much, but there could be something to stop things going off topic so quickly. And honestly, topics don't go off topic as much as they used to, thats always a good thing. Therefore i will not vote as i do and don't like it. If someone wants to make a rule that subjects HAVE to stay on topic at all times then they can do that, but i think it defeats the whole point of a "board of random things". What i should have stated above is that its ok in here more than it is in the others... Except maybe introductions... I don't mind what happens really.

Some conversations need to go off the topic so they don't get boring and to make them more interesting.
Yeah i know some are pathetic when they change on the first page. So, like Manda, i can't really vote, cause i agree and disagree with both!!
I know a lot of people got annoyed with the Portsmouth thread, cause it was like a personal conversation between 4 people, but hey.... i'm gonna shut up now, cause i'm confusing myself!!

I agree, Im on the fence, because going off topic can actually be fun, personally I think that if someone started a new thread, carrying on from another it would just get plain old confusing! But I also understand its annoying sometimes where you dont have much idea of what is going on... therefore, i cant vote.

well it depends obviously if something goes on for pages and its just two people talking back and forth to one another it will be closed.... but as for things going off topic, theres nothing you can do about it - if you start deleting or closing off topic replies then you'd basically be deleting every single thread on the board.

for my 2cents...
i'm not enetirely sure this is a really a 'voting' situation. i don't think it is in anyone's best interests to have stuff like this moderated, but i think what Kate was getting at is that maybe there should be a little self-policing going on.
you don't NEED someone to tell you not to do something to not do it. next time you feel like you want to stick some pointless random reply to a topic up, why not just count to 10 and then ask yourself if what you have to say is of any relevance. there's 800 (or whatever) members of this messageboard, but there's the same 20 people who manage to account for 99.9% of posts... and there's a MASSIVE volume of posts. unfortunately, half the threads end up going something like this ::
------
opening question :: "i have some photos of FW from <insert show> but i don't know how to post them. can anyone help me out?"
reply 1 :: "wheeee!!! i like photos!!! i just took a load of photos of my dog"
reply 2 :: "yay! i just got a dog! it's named Jeff! after Jeff!"
reply 3 :: "if i had a dog, i'd call it Jeff too"
reply 4 :: "i don't like dogs. i've got a cat"
etc etc etc etc etc for 18 pages.
---
i'd like to pretend that's a wild exaggeration... but it sorta ain't.

I wasn't really intending the poll as a decision tool, I was just trying to gauge what peoples' thoughts on it.....
Yeah I may be reasonably new on here and all the people who've been on here longer are probably just thinking I'm whining about it but I just think it can be a little unthoughtful when threads get taken off-topic......
I was suggesting that threads get deleted or closed or anything, it's a bit like what Ian said about "self-policing", just kinda think before you post stuff. I'm not saying that I'm a complete saint and only post worthy replies, coz I don't.
It doesn't matter it was only a suggestion anyway.

Yeah... Ian has his own very unique way of getting to the point - and it works. The bottom line is - EVERY thread on this forum will end up off topic - its the nature of the board and will never change. After all - this is the "board of random sexual things" as it's been nicknamed by more than a few people. This will always be a random place - but Ian's example is something of what not to do... and conversations between two people are annoying - go download msn. But other than that - keep on going as you are

going off topic i think is fine if its not real boring and something ppl dont wanna know, i apoligize for random crap u dont want to know that i say if i ever have i dont think i have tho...........ah well if i have.
but i think that for this reason it is good that they have the thingy where only moderators and stuff can post if ppl are only intrested in the news

this is the "board of random sexual things" as it's been nicknamed by more than a few people. Actually it was nicknamed by moi, but its called that by many other people. And also i don't think the board will change anyway, random isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless it gets out of control or too much. Personal conversations belong elsewhere, but on here things will always go off-topic. Always have, always will. As long as in the first couple of pages it doesn't go from a thread starting off being about pictures of FW and becoming something about pets. But that doesn't happen that much, but it will all go off-topic anyway. Theres nothing anyone can do about it...

It is inevitable

'inevitable' means "certain to happen and unable to be avoided or prevented". topics drifting wildly off into another dimension is entirely avoidable... it just folks applying a touch of common sense and having a little thought for other users of the board.
