I'm gonna have to get used to "Beverly Hills." I keep wanting it to bust out and rock out... but it doesn't. I have to get used to the fact that it's meant to be a more mellow pop song.

BvH is just the obvious single throwaway song, I think. albumfive.com posted three clips of new Weezer songs they sourced from an MTV2 special on making the video, and while they're down now (you can still go to the site and check if they're up again), they sound a LOT better. People are right in describing "We Are All On Drugs" (appaerntly the second single) as very Green-ish, but Rivers' vocals are much more inflected and less robot-like than anything off that album, and it just seems a little more interesting (only two verses, so it's impossible to make a full judgment yet). Although what I'm LOVING is "This Is Such a Pity." Cool little synths, Rivers singing simple (but at least EMOTIONAL) lyrics ("how is your heart little darling / I didn't mean to get so mad / let me just hold you closely / how did things get so bad?") with nice backups from Brian, and what seems to be some nice instrumentation. People are complaining that it's not blatantly melodic enough as, say, Blue material, but I think it's just the next evolution of Weezer - which I can very much appreciate (a lot of the stuff I've been listening to recently isn't necessarily melodic on the surface, and takes a while to really absorb). It sounds like a potentially beautiful song and the 10-or-so second clip interests me enough to want to buy a copy of the album once it comes out. And yes, you can REALLY hear that Rivers is singing from the heart on this one...something he hasn't done since Pinkerton.
The third song is stuck in the background as some of the Playboy Bunnies from the video chitchatter about something, and one of the guys from the band describes how the Weezer nerds and the Bunnies somehow managed to blend in together better than they had expected. Obviously not much to pass judgment on, but everyone seems to think it's very promising.
Also, Brian described the new album as "a mix between Blue and Pinkerton, with Maladroit solos." I can live with that.
Plus, there's a music video for BvH up now too. Again...albumfive.com

I have a question, right after the words 'Beverly Hills/ That's where I want to be", what is that annoying little voice saying, because I don't know and it's bugging me...

I thought that was what was said, but it annoyed me so much that I had to quit listening to it.

I dont know what to think of the new song...........in fact......when it came on the radio in my car the other night I didnt know what the hell it was until Trisha said...."you know this is the new weezer song" and I had no clue at all.........it didnt sound like them to me.........sometimes bands with brand new amps take on new sounds and it works for them.........im still waiting to see how this is going to play out for my beloved Weezer

It's Rivers' shot at being a "rock star" again (not just in the eyes of Weezer's group of obsessed fans, but pop culture in general), and I suppose you can't blame him. Rivers has called it a "rap song," and I'm sure they had fun with it. I don't personally think it's all that bad, although I probably wouldn't be caught listening to it on my own free will. Still, the other clips I've heard from the album (from the aforementioned link) are all great and promising by my standards, so I'm still looking forward to the album.
